GRADIENT SPACE

YEAR: 2012

LOCATION: VANCOUVER, BC

PROGRAM: HALLWAY

STATUS: PROPOSAL

A hallway is usually considered to be a space of transition rather than destination, and occupants move through conventional hallway space quickly without stopping. This proposal is for the hallway space on the lower level of the new UBC Student Union Building. The intension is to create a hallway that is both occupiable and sociable. The design takes advantage of the existing hallway, which is converging towards one end, with the application of an overall "gradient" concept. Not only is the proposed hallway a passage of engaging qualities, but it also provides students with a variety of spaces to either enjoy solitude or actively socialize.
